Excretion and Kidneys

This is an activity of the biology book that we had to make for our biology class

1) a) Define the terms excretion and egestion

  • Excretionas removal from organisms of the waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration), toxic materials, and substances in excess of requirements.
  • Egestionas the passing out of food that has not been digested or absorbed, as faeces, through the anus

1) b) The kidney is an excretory organ. It produces urine that contains urea. State where in the body urea is formed and what is formed from.

Urea is formed in the liver from excess amino acids.

Nervous system

In our Biology class we read and watched a video of the nervous system. Also, we made some activities that are in Male’s blog.

1a: -The control centre are the receptors, neurones, central nervous system and the nervous system.

1b: Motor Neuron: Carry signals from the CNS to the effects.

Sensory Neuron: Carry signals from receptors to the CNS.

Relay Neuron: Carry messages from one part of the CNS to another.

Then, we have to look for a short video explanning the Synaptic Transmission. Synaptic transmission is the process whereby one neuron communicates with other neurons or effectors, such as a muscle cell, at a synapse.

Essay “The Yellow Wallpaper”

This is the first essay of the year in literature, I made it with Catu Grosso about the story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” that we have been analyzing  in our literature class.

 

Essay

The “Yellow WallPaper” is a gothic story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The protagonist is a woman who was diagnosticated of an after birth depression, she had recently been a mother and her child was taken away because of this “depression” she had. John, is her husband who is a professional and during the story we can identify that in many ways he could be the villain of the story. In the following essay we are going to analyse if John is really the villain of the story.

 

The setting of the story is in the 19ºth century, at this time the enlightenment changed everyone’s way of thinking, science started being more important than god or religion. People started looking for scientifics answers and  John was a doctor and we can say is the epitome of positivism, “If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband assures there is a temporary nervous depression”, he truly believed he was doing the right things to help his wife. John left aside his feelings and emotions, he was more concerned about the medical results, than what she was feeling “-dear, you are better … -Better in body perhaps” he was making her say what he wanted to listen. He told her she looked better, physically she was happier and not so skinny, but she responds that she was not feeling better in her inside, maybe on the outside, the appearance, “John does not know how much I really suffer” she was hiding and repressing her feelings and thoughts so that John would not be scared nor send her to an hospital,“But john says that if I don’t get well faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall”, He was convinced that was a temporary illness and maybe she was just being herself.

 

John was prohibiting her wife to express herself, to be free. He forbidden her to read or write “There comes John, and I must put this away, he hates to have me write a word” The woman was alone and bored, it was not fair that John didn’t let her read nor write. Also, the woman asked him to change to another bedrooms, she felt that there was something wrong about that room, but John behave as an ignorant and told her they were going to stay up there because is was better for her, “Then do let us go downstairs” but they didn’t, they stay at that room which made her feel uncomfortable and nervous at the beginning.

When John put her wife in that room, isolated from the rest of the house, when he didn’t let her do exercise, write about anything or even to see her own baby it was because he thought that he was doing the right thing, he was helping her wife. ”John is a physician and perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster” he wasn’t the indicated doctor that would have made her feel better, he was a physician but he was absolutely convinced that he was doing the right thing, that he was helping the person he loved and he was married with. “John says the worst thing I can do is to think about my condition, and I confess it always makes me feel bad” the narrator here confess that some things that John was doing, made her feel better. So he was trying to help, and he didn’t knew he was not doing the right things.

Ensayo – Lenguaje

La profesora de literatura nos pidió que hagamos un ensayo analizando la frase “el lenguaje es el arma mas poderosa”

 

El lenguaje es sin duda alguna el arma más poderosa que puede utilizar el hombre por las diversas cosas que pueden llegar a pasar gracias a lo que una persona diga.

Las armas, en las guerras por ejemplo, no pueden ser utilizadas para llegar a la paz entre dos países, las armas solo se usan en situaciones violentas, por ejemplo guerras. Las armas te convierten en asesino y por consiguiente, nada bueno puede salir de ellas. Aunque desde otro punto de vista, las armas te pueden defender, por ejemplo los policías diariamente defienden a otras personas usando armas y si tienen que disparar, no dudan en hacerlo.

Por otra parte, el lenguaje usado para el mal, no hace daño si o si, si vos insultas o agredís verbalmente a otra persona y puede ser que la hagas sentir mal consigo mismo, pero puede ser que no le importe, sea porque está acostumbrado o simplemente te puede estar ignorando.

El lenguaje usado para el bien, es un “arma” poderosa en mi opinión porque puede llegar a la paz entre dos países después de una larga guerra, en la cual murieron muchas personas, cosa que no puede pasar con las armas. También pueden salvar vidas inocentes si se llega a un acuerdo gracias a las palabras, cosa que pasa en la mayoría de las guerras porque ambos países agotaron sus recursos.

En conclusión, depende desde que punto de vista vos reflexiones sobre la frase dada, el arma más poderosa es el lenguaje por la cantidad de cosas que puede prevenir y producir.

REspiration

In Biology we’ve been learning about cellular respiration. Here’s an activity i did with Rochi and Delfi

Activities

1 – State the uses of energy in our body.

– Contracting muscles, so that we can move parts of the body

– Making protein molecules by linking together amino acids into long chains

– Cell division, so that we can repair damaged tissues and can grow

– Active transport, so that we can move substances across cell membranes up their concentration gradient

– Transmiting nerve impulses, so that we can transfer information quickly from one part of the body to another

– Producing heat inside the body, to keep the body temperature constant even if the environment is cold

2 – Construct a mind map about respiration. You may do it on a sheet of paper or use any of the tools available such as bubble.us

You should include:

a- Definitions

b- Types: Aerobic and anaerobic (in muscles and yeast)

c- Equation in words

d- Amount of energy released

3 – Explain the meaning of “oxygen debt”

Anaerobic respiration produces an oxygen debt. This is the amount of oxygen needed to oxidise lactic acid to carbon dioxide and water. The existence of an oxygen debt explains why we continue to breathe deeply and quickly for a while after exercise.

 4- Search in the internet a short video, which explains why the breathing rate does not return to normal immediately after vigorous exercise stops.

Online test: The Gothic novel

This is an online test we had to do for our language class

  1. Theoretical background: Create an infographic including the main characteristics of the Gothic Novel as a genre. Name at least two relevant pieces of work and their writers.

  2. Writing task: Imagine you had to interview one of the  authors of these stories: The Cask of Amontillado, The Monkey’s Paw and The Yellow Wall Paper. Choose one. Find out about him/her and write the interview. What would you ask them? What would they answer? 

Me: When and where were you born?

Edgar Allan Poe: I was born the 19th of January 1809 in Boston.

Me: Which is your favorite genre?

Edgar Allan Poe: Definitely, gothic, I wrote a lot of gothic novels and I also wrote satires, humor tales and hoaxes.

Me: Why did you enlist the army?

Edgar Allan Poe: I enlisted the army because I didn’t have enough money to support myself, I served at Fort Independence in Boston.

Me: Why did your name change from Edgar Poe to Edgar Allan Poe?

Edgar Allan Poe: Because when I was born I was named Edgar Poe and then my father abandoned my family and 1 year later my mom died so I was adopted by the Allan family and they changed my name to Edgar Allan Poe.

Me: Who where you married with?

Edgar Allan Poe: I was married with my cousin.

Me: When did you get married?

Edgar Allan Poe: When I was 26 I got married with my cousin who was 13. 11 years later, she died at the age of 24.

Me: Why did you become a well-known writer?

Edgar Allan Poe: Because I became one of the first American authors of the 19th century to become more popular in Europe than in the United States.

Me: When did you publish your first detective story?

Edgar Allan Poe: I published it around the year 1841, when I was working with George Graham.

Me: Which work that you wrote would you say it is the best?

Edgar Allan Poe: I would say “polititian” because it is my only play and I really enjoyed writing it.

Me: You once worked at a newspaper right?

Edgar Allan Poe: Yes, I worked at “The Broadway Journal” from the year 1845 to the year 1846 when the journal ran out of money.

1) Name signs/symptoms caused by cholera.

2) State ways in which the bacterium spreads in the village.

3) What is diarrhoea?

4) How does the cholera bacterium cause diarrhoea?

6) Name the different actions which the boy taught to the people in the village to prevent the disease.

 

  1. Diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration
  2. Through water, dirty hands, flies and dirty food
  3. An ​illness in which the body’s ​solid ​waste is more ​liquid than ​usual and comes out of the ​body more often
  4. It produces a toxin that attaches to the wall of the small intestine and affects the villi and makes it secrete chloride. That causes water from the blood to move into the lumen through osmosis.
  5. He purified the water and then gave him the purified water with half a teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar to obtain again the minerals.
  6. To wash their hands before eating and cooking and after going to the toilet, to filtrate the water, and to wash food before eating it.
